"SKA Angler Of the Year" The Bandit does it again!

Ron Mitchell, Accurate Pro Staff and captain of the SKA team "Bandit" was recently crowned "SKA Angler of the Year" for the 2009 season. This is the Bandits second SKA Angler of the year award in the last four seasons a feet that has not been done in the new tournament format.

One Tough Reel

Bruce Smith docked Shogun at Fisherman’s Landing September 29 after a six-day Accurate charter with 19 anglers. The Accurate company put numerous rod and reel combinations on the boat for the trip, and anglers approached Jack Nilsen on the dock afterward to say they enjoyed using the products. Skipper Smith used some himself.

“Hands down,” said Smith, “Accurate makes the finest reels on the market.”

Smith said he used the new BX2 600 model with 60-pound line and 80-pound backing on it for tuna and yellowtail on the trip.

“I got big yellowtail with it, and I got tuna on The Ridge,” he said.

The last couple of trips to Guadalupe Island have opened my eyes to some new, effective techniques and the tackle that is used to compliment them. To say things or the way we fish is changing is an understatement, west coast anglers have always been at the forefront of tackle technology and innovation. I believe live bait has a major role in what pushes us to find smaller tackle, clearer monofilament and fluorocarbon, composite rods and a ’mad scientist’ outlook of trying different approaches to present the most lively sardine or anchovy as far away from the boat as fast as possible.

In past articles I have named names and this will be no different. There are products that I see that work and many that don’t. Fishermen enjoy hearing specifics, although many times it doesn’t matter what color of jig you use, we want to hear what color is the hottest, newest out there, that “magic bullet.” I am here to put out some new things that I have seen work, on the water, day after day. Many times it will take years for a lot of us to come around to new techniques or materials, but you have to understand also that captains and crews don’t like to endorse hot, new, magic bullets until they see for themselves that they works, under pressure.

Smaller, smaller, smaller reels; when is it going to stop? Not very soon, I hope. Accurate and Avet are leading the way to the small reel revolution. If you haven’t picked up a small Accurate Boss TwinDrag 2-Speed 870 or 665, or Avet JX or LX, now is the time to do it. Hands down, these reels are awesome fishing killing tools. Ten years ago I was not too fond of Accurate reels, there were some problems. Today this opinion of mine has done a 180-degree flip, and I fully endorse these little powerful two speed reels. And no, I am not getting paid to say this, nor have I received compensation in any way, Jack Nilsen and sons have come a long way and they have always pushed the two speed envelope with their innovative products and I really can’t say enough good things about their new reels today.

Why should you go out and spend your pretty pennies on small reels? Two words: bait presentation. Of course reels won’t help you select that hottest sardine in the tray, but they do allow that sardine to pull the spectra off your spool with a minimum of inertia and continued free spool. This matters. How much drag that is created between the spool and line in the water will determine how many bites you get. What do we do? We decrease the size or diameter of our lines (spectra) and the size and diameter of the reels or spools.

The hard part of doing all of this is to do it without sacrificing line strength or pulling power. Secondly, it’s a lot easier to tote around a smaller reel all day than it is a two speed 4/0, plain and simple. And yes, these diminutive monsters will do just that, take the place of much of your bigger older tackle. Third, the two-speed aspect of small reels was a big question mark when they came out. Why would you need a two speed for 40 or 50-lb. line, much less for 30? Well, for one thing, not everyone and his uncle gets to fish off of Mag bay or Hurricane for a few weeks every winter. Us working Joes spend our time at places like said Guadalupe island and Alijos rocks, where the fishing can be less than wide open and we actually have to fish our baits away from the boat.

In situations like offshore bluefin fishing, you have to use smaller diameter lines like thirty and forty to get a bite. One thing in common with these locals is the size of the fish. Guadalupe especially this year, gives the five-day angler a serious chance at getting that Holy Grail of a 100-lb. yellowfin tuna. Not that everyone is getting them, in fact only a very small percentage are over 100 lbs. right now, but almost all of them are over 50! Now trying to get in a 70-lb. yellowfin tuna with a single speed reel is a chore to say the least. Do yourself a favor, drop it in low and get that fish to the boat.

Next item of the day: short top-shots and Blackwater fluorocarbon. Here is a slightly different take on things. I am on the Blackwater pro-staff, but this is because I went to them and asked to work with their product, since it’s so good. As in previous articles, I can say enough about the abrasion resistance of the Blackwater material, but today I want to mention the elongation factor or simply put how much it stretches. Yes, Blackwater fluorocarbon stretches, so put away your belief of pulled hooks because of short top-shots of fluorocarbon.

No more feeling like you are fishing with a piece of wire attached to your spectra, fluoro has come along way since its inception to be used for a fishing line. Again I would like to state on how clear the BW material is. Just hold up to the light of the tackle shop next to any other brand and you will be a believer. For me personally, clear lines help in getting bites, whether its due to the fish actually have trouble seeing the color or the line or its just because I have more confidence in clear line, the more clear the better.

Short top shots: here I make a stand. Many people will disagree. Short top shots kick butt. I love ’em. What it comes down to is that I am as much of a gear head as the next guy and you have to be if you want to do these things right. Seizing or crimping, when used in conjunction with cyanoacrylate glue (Zap-a-Gap, Mega-stick, and no, they are not all the same and there is room for improvement in this area), both work well. Hollow spectra for seamless connections that pass through your guides on the cast has helped immensely.

These are a couple things that are happening out here this late summer. If you are not scheduled on a boat right now, you may want to find an opening. Guadalupe has been a lot of fun for the last two weeks, and the Rocks are just that, they’re rockin’ right now. Fishing is good, come out and enjoy it on any one of the fine long range boats that run out of San Diego.

All Boss Gears 70% Stronger

Accurate had spent a lot of time researching gears with focus on material and in December 2007 we decided to make a change. In January 2008 we started to manufacture all of our Boss gears with 17-4 Stainless Steel instead of 303 Stainless Steel. With this change in material all Boss gears are 70% stronger! We started implementing this in the production of all of our Boss TwinDrag reels including the Boss 2-Speeds in the beginning of the 2008. This decision was made based on feedback from our loyal fishermen looking for gearing that would stand up to rigors of today's Japanese style of Jig fishing.

This change was primarily made based on based how long our gears were lasting for the jigging enthusiasts using our 665 narrow and 665 narrow-narrow reels. This type of fishing is really abusive to gears and we have seen some main gears wear out in less than a year of heavy usage. The new 17-4 material will bring our Boss reel line to an even higher level of toughness.

New Pit Bull Clamp for Cork Jig Rods

Accurate has released a new device certain to appeal to jig casters, those anglers who favor longer rods with “deckhand-style” cork or tape-wrapped handles. The new, much wider and stronger clamp holds rod and reel together over a much greater gripping area, and will obviously be less prone to loosening, slipping or getting mounted askew.

The new clamp is made from solid 6061 T6 aluminum with a lightening hole in the center. It’s fastened by six Allen nuts instead of the former pair of nuts on the older clamps, so it should grip like a Pit Bull. The reel to rod connect is very secure with no movement. It was recently tested at Guadalupe Island of Mexico by Jack Nilsen and other anglers.

We designed this reel for 450 yards of 130# spectra(baided line). This is a great reel for Marlin and Tuna. The response has been really good from our big game anglers. New Slant Power Handle

We have been working on the new handle for the Boss 30 & 50 2-Speed reels and came up with a really good design for the next generation of knobs. The New Power Handle Knob is at a 9 degree slant for more power and has criss cross machined groves on the back side for more grip. We debuted the knobs at the ICAST show in Las Vegas, Nevada in July with a great response. We plan on putting this new design on other models. Look for it in the coming months.

It seems like trends are always changing when it comes to the tackle that Southern Californian anglers gear up with.

As far as reels go, it’s safe to say that there are two major trends. One is going with small two-speeds for not just long range trips, but also local fishing. The other is companies developing and selling reels that are designed for one or two purposes, like, say, a jigging reel or something like that.

Accurate is one of the companies at the forefront of reel designing and innovation, and the Corona-based company has been pumping out more and more two-speeds over the last couple of years. Now pretty much all their Boss reels come in two-speeds.

The smallest of the Boss two-speeds on the market (at the time being, anyway) is the 870 narrow, which is called the B2-870N. It, like many new reels on the market, was designed with a specific purpose/application in mind.

“The 870 narrow was originally developed as a jigging reel for vertical jigging Japanese style knife jigs,” says Accurate’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ben Secrest, “but it’s a great reel for local fishing for tuna, yellowtail and marlin. I was down at Rancho Leonero the other week and was catching stripers on the 870 narrow … you can really do a lot with it — it’s just a killer reel for fishing 50- or 65-pound braid (as in braided line or Spectra) on.”

The 870 narrow falls into the category of being one of those reels that was designed for a specific purpose but ended up being a multi-tasker.

Sure, it can be used for deep jigging thanks to its narrow design and 6:1 high gears, but its perfect application for local and long range angling doesn’t revolve around just jigging.

Loaded up with 65-pound braid to a short piece of fluorocarbon the reel is an absolute killer (it holds a little less than 300 yards of 65-pound braid). It can be used as your heavy outfit for fishing big baits and squid on for yellows and seabass here at the local islands, while also being a winch of a reel to fish albacore with when they really want to die. If you hook a bluefin or something your bases are covered as well. It’s small and light, so you can fish it all day and uncork longer casts than you can with, say, a 4/0 loaded with 50-pound.

I’ve been fishing mine at Catalina a little bit when we’re really backed in tight to the kelp. It’s usually the heaviest rig I bring, that little 870 Narrow loaded with green 65-pound Jerry Brown Spectra to five feet of 50-pound Seaguar Fluoro

Premier. I fish it with a good 15 pounds of drag. If the hook pulls, it pulls, but either way the heat really gets put on any yellows or seabass (or bat rays) that get hooked on the rig. Low gear isn’t really always necessary for fishing “smaller game” here locally. With that said, the low gear is like a winch. It works out great when a fish gets you in the kelp and you literally have to winch in the whole stringer. (The picture of Jenni Cohen with her Catalina yellow caught on the reel shows just a piece of the fifty-plus-pound kelp stringer the 870 Narrow brought up with the yellow; hence the term “winch”).

So far as rods that match up with the 870 Narrow there are a bunch of candidates. One of them is one of Accurate’s new braid rods. Yeah, that’s right; Accurate now offers a complete line-up of rods that were designed for fishing specifically with braided lines. To the best of my knowledge they are the first company to offer rods that were built around fishing strictly with braid.

But then again, what else would you expect from a company that engineers their reels around fishing with the unforgiving nature of braided lines.

Finally after years of turning around the Anti-reverse bearing in Accurate Boss sideplates for people who like to fish their reels left handed , the engineers finally came togeher and designed Accurate's first Boss true left handed reel . The first sideplate that went into production was the B-870X sideplate , we made a limited run on these new sideplates but plan on full production runs on all Accurate Boss sideplates this year as the production schedule permits .
Our wish here at Accurate is to have all of the the Boss Single Speed reels in True Left Handed versions avaiable for purcahse by 2009 and also plan on being able to upgrade customers existing Boss Reels to True Left Hand versions for a conversion fee starting in 2009 . Great things are happening here in Accurate Land especially for all the south paws that fish .

New Internal Z Slide in TwinSpins

We chose to make the Internal Z Slide out of 7075 Aluminum instead of 6061 Aluminum. 7075 is double the strength of 6061. The Internal Z Slide is a vital part that keeps the spool from turning. This will allow our extreme anglers to take the TwinSpin to an even higher drag.

Accurate Fishing Products introduces New Boss and SR Series of Rods

Accurate Fishing Products, manufacturer of well known TwinDrag™ fishing reels that include ATD Platinum and Boss E-Series conventional reels, as well as the SR platinum TwinSpin reels has created a line of rods designed for fishing braided line with the well known Boss E-Series and SR Series of reels.

The New Accurate rods are constructed of a six-ply graphite glass material that gives the angler both sensitivity and strength while offering a reduced diameter rod that is extremely light.

There are three classes of rods that include Boss Series of conventional rods in 6’6” and 7’ lengths, Boss jig rods in both conventional and spinning, and a line of SR Spinning rods designed with the SR12, SR-20, and SR30 in mind.

The Boss Series of rods features the new AERO guide with SIC inserts, EVA grip, and unique rubber gimbal butt for comfort. These rods are offered in line ratings from 30 through 100 pound braided line or 20 through 50LB monofilament.

The Accurate Jigging rods are offered in six styles that include three spinning and three conventional models featuring EVA grips, Rubber gimbal, and FUJI™ SIC guides for braided lines between 30 and 100 pounds in sizes 5’8”, 6’ and 6’6” depending on your jigging preferences.

The SR Series of spinning rods feature EVA grips, FUJI™ guides, and are offered in a 7’ length with models that include 12/20 for 30 to 50 LB braided line, 15/30 for 50 to 65LB braided line, and a 25/40 for 65 to 80 LB braided line.

All the Accurate rods feature a unique fast to slower action that suited for the friendly use of braided lines and will work excellent with monofilament lines. The harded you pull on these rods, the less stress that is put on the angler, which equates to more pressure on the fish. The rods are extremely powerful, lightweight, and built to make your fishing time more enjoyable.

Boss 2-Speed 30 & 50 Press Release

In March 2008 we released the new Boss 30 2-Speed and the Boss 50 2-Speed reels. These reels are going to bridge the gap between our ATD reels and the Boss reels. The suggested retail is going to be $629.99 for the B2-30 and $649.99 for the B2-50. Look for the B2-30 in June 2008 and the B2-50 in July 2008.
